Paying for College

Meeting college expenses requires careful planning. Fortunately, students and their families have many viable options. Communication between student and family is an important first step in the financial planning stage for college. Make certain that the student and parent are on the same page as to what is expected in the funding of this important milestone for the student.

Parents typically have a set budget in mind of how they are prepared to help. Students also have expectations of a budget as well. Dialogue should be open, honest, and tempered. Start by determining what the tuition and housing expenses will be and then talk about ancillary living expenses.

Thoroughly determine the costs of the university and determine what financial aid is available. After this you will want to determine what leftover expenses there are to cover. These may include a portion of the tuition and the housing. Do not forget your basic living expenses and then think about those unexpected expenditures that seem to creep up out of nowhere.

Do not rule out anything to make your college dream a reality. Loans, scholarships, grants, work study and a job are all part of the puzzle when determining how to live as comfortably as possible while not extending yourself too far in debt.

When planning for the financing of your college expenses, please consult a financial aid officer at your university to give you the best advice.
