The UNC School of the Arts (UNCSA) serves select high school students as well as those seeking bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Dance, Design & Production, Drama, Filmmaking, and Music. Admission is restricted to those with exceptional aptitude and potential in one of the aforementioned specialty areas. One’s course of study can be demanding, and being a student at UNCSA means being commited to professional development and fully learning one’s craft.
The UNCSA census is relatively small when compared to other schools in the UNC educational system averaging just short of 900 students. The School publishes a weekly calendar of events to keep students informed of activities that will enrich and entertain them. These include poetry readings, open mic nights, dances, beach trips, ski trips, comedy shows, and small concerts. The UNCSA also provides plentiful means for physical recreation. With over 350 programs in play over the school year, students never lack for something to occupy their minds and their time.
High school students as well as full-time freshman and sophomores are required to live on campus if they reside more than 25 miles from the UNCSA. About 750 of UNCSA’s students live on campus or in nearby apartments. This community living environment is believed to be beneficial to learning and provides a more stimulating environment for developing artists. It is generally considered to be the safest living option too.
