If you are going abroad with a group, expect that there will be some structure, guidelines, and rules to follow. While this may sound like a drag at first, know that it will actually help you by giving you a safety net while you are away. It will give you a go to person if you find yourself in any type of difficulty. This is a good start for your first trip abroad. You may decide that a second trip abroad will not need as much organization.
Expect some stress. Immersing yourself in a new culture may produce a certain amount of anxiety. This is probably true with any “unknown”. If you do get stressed out, remember that whatever you put into the experience is what you will get out of it. So open yourself up to lots of wonderful possibilities. Talk with someone who has gone abroad before so you will know what types of experiences other college students have had on similar trips.
Your group leader will give you a list of things to help prepare you for your travel abroad. Expect weekly or monthly meetings before you leave. These will help you get to know the people in your group. Your leader will also be providing insightful information to help you plan and prepare.
Take a journal and a camera to document your experience. The journal writing will help you reflect on your experience and determine what you can do differently on your next adventure.
